If you would like to see what the editor of a hugely popular magazine goes thorough day after day, then the documentary The September Issue should fill the bill. Crammed with an ‘all in a days work’ philosophy, director R. J. Cutler provides a keen insight of an industry that caters to a woman’s style and ego.
Watching this film and listening to the amazing sounds for the guitars of Led Zeppelin’s Jimmy Page, U2’s The Edge and Jack White was entertaining and enjoyable. For those who have an interest in rock music, the documentary is a must see.
Ang Lee hits the mark with this excellent adaptation of Taking Woodstock from the memoirs of Elliot Tiber. Lee takes us back to that magical event in 1969 like no one has ever done before. I loved the way he got me involved in the storyline from the very beginning to his inevitable ending. Cool and groovy man!
Going into this film I was wondering why I was covering a film called Bandslam, but I’m glad for the assignment. This sweet teen-tween film really rocks. Topped off by some great songs by Alyson Michalka and very good acting by a fine support cast, the movie is one of the teen oriented summer’s best.
This documentary has soul, sounds and sovereignty on its side and cashes in on all three. Focusing in on Zaire and its people Soul Power provides some blasts from the past.
The extended DVD edition of the Jonas Brothers The Concert Experience is a nicely choreographed film targeted for female teens and tweens and it surely hits the mark. Covering most all their music, the film shows well on the home screen. Although it was more of a concert experience at the theatres, I found I had more control over the action for replays and pauses. The girls will probably drive you nuts with this one, so make sure you have a DVD player in their room.
