THE BOX

Well, bad news here, The Box is slow moving, poorly directed and therefore has weak performances. The trailer which seems to promise a science fiction thriller ends up to be an enticement to a storyline that looses its credibility early on in the film. I wish I could give you a saving grace point that would help The Box as I really wanted it to be a great watch, but sci-fi lovers will probably have to wait for 2012.

THE MEN WHO STARE AT GOATS

Although I am a big fan of George Clooney, not all his films work for me. This is the case of The Men Who Stare At Goats. While some may call the film creative genius, to me this film is uncreative nonsense. If you love films where the writer lets his imagination run wild, then you may get more out of the film than I. Warning: The makers of the film chose of put all the funny parts in the trailer.

THE BAADER MEINHOF COMPLEX

Completely engrossed is the only way I can describe my seeing The Baader Meinhof Complex. The film is based on a true story that shows the effects of terrorism and the determination of left-wing extremists. Insightful yet despotic the film made me cringe at times seeing the lengths and means terrorists will go to make their point. It’s an astonishing film that reaches deep into the gut of an activist group that really changed Germany over a ten-year span starting in the late 60’s and brought the meaning of terrorism to the forefront.

THE DAMNED UNITED

A true story about soccer (Football to England) brings some very good entertainment to the screen. It’s called The Damned United and I liked the acting, cinematography and direction of this sports period piece. If you like your competition with some drama and action then The Damned United is your kick in the grass.

THIS IS IT!

Seeing Michael Jackson on stage in This Is It, happy and in control, made me wonder what could have happened to this wonderful man. I was in total awe watching him create a final concert from his vision and the way Michael threw himself into his work. The film is a must see for Jackson fans, pop music lovers and for those who want a last endearing look at the King of Pop.

AN EDUCATION

This nicely played out story based on the actual memoirs of an affair is simple and amusing. Although it is somewhat similar to Lolita, being an actual happing does give it an edge over the famous themed film of older man soliciting a teenager. But, An Education is a love story no matter how distasteful or prurient as the acting and direction make it entertaining.

THE HUNGER on DVD

This quality television series features some of the bloodthirsty creatures that computers can generate. I am totally blown away by Tony and Ridley’s The Hunger a fine production that’s heads above most horror films. It’s Twilight for adults. Fine acting, direction and cinematography prove that it doesn’t have to be on a movie theater screen to be a big event.

SCARE TACTICS Season 3 on DVD

Tracy Morgan one of the comedy stars of 30 Rock hosts this funny spoof and although the DVD box claims it’s hot, I found it elementary. My reasons include that the show is brainless and feeds on the gullible. Oh! That’s intentional isn’t it? Shows like this will do anything for a laugh, but how many ways can you scare someone before it’s not funny anymore?

GOOD HAIR

There are several documentaries at theaters these days, but how about a comical one that’s enjoyable? What about one called Good Hair? Actually who would have thought that hair is funny? Well Chris Rock shows how funny it could be in this hilarious doc on women keeping it cool with extensions and sodium hydroxide.

A SERIOUS MAN

If you think you have troubles, then go to the movies and see A Serious Man. I found myself laughing during most of the film and even at the wrong time. Filled with all the things you would not want to happen to you, it becomes an outlet to make you feel better about yourself. Extremely good acting, presentation by the Coen brothers and a cool look at the early 60’s, what more can you ask for.
