Do you like a mystery film with a lot of twists and turns? For those who enjoy trying to crack a case before it’s all played out on the screen there’s Last Looks with a storyline that’s great for guessing right up to the exciting finale. The story is played out by some very good actors that meld into their characters extremely well and put on a good show. The story does get quite quirky however, so buckle up for a lot of brutal bruising.
Ex LAPD cop Charlie Waldo (Charlie Hunnam) has left the force and secluded himself far from the business. However, his ability to ferret out evidence to figure out a murder case has been missed by only his closest friends in police circles. With high profile prosperous actor Alastair Pinch (Mel Gibson) being accused of killing his wife, he gets a visit from his former love interest Lorena (Morena Baccarin) who wants him to work as a private detective on the case. When Lorena goes missing, Charlie makes a visit to Pinch at his opulent mansion to get to the bottom of Lorena’s disappearance. While there however, Pinch convinces him to investigate his case.
The film introduces several characters as it moves along at a slow pace, each one supplying clues and possible motives for being involved in Pinch’s wife’s death. The pace here, while fun for most arm chair detectives, may be a deterrent to crime action fans. However, if you stick with the plot, it’s a lot of fun to watch. Especially watching Charlie Hunnam take one beating after another as he starts to unravel the mess while solving the crime.
Last Looks has been rated R by the MPAA for pervasive language. The film does have some nudity, a sexual scene, profanity, violence and some brutality as well. 3 out of 5 stars. It is now playing in select theaters and can be seen on VOD and Digital platforms.
