Opening in theaters this weekend, the movie Four Good Days keeps you captivated from the opening scene to the heartfelt finale. It’s an amazing story inspired by the persons who lived it, Amanda Wendler and Libby Alexander. Gut wrenching at times, the film takes you into the life of a heroin addict as she tries to make one final stab at recovery. There have been many films that delve into the addict’s darkness, but this one shows some hope for those stricken with the compulsion.
Molly (Mila Kunis), a heroin drug addict, shows up on her mother Deb’s (Glenn Close) doorstep one morning. Rapping on the door Deb approaches and looks through the window to see Molly in obvious distress. “The deal was you won’t come home until you are clean†she says. Molly responds “That is why I am here, I’m done and I want to come home.†So beings a heartbreaking look into the soul of people who deal with life altering mistakes and bad choices that fester in families until either death or a timely recovery brings it all to an end.
What makes this film special is the excellent acting by Glenn Close as the challenged mother who has to make decisions. Distraught seeing her daughter in her awful state and being asked once again to deal with her possible lies and thievery makes her performance special. Mila Kunis’s characterization of Molly show’s she still has acting prowess. Her depiction of the woman who has been dealing with the drug affliction for 10 years looks spot on.
Four Good Days has been rated R by the MPAA for drug content, language throughout and brief sexuality. My assessment is 3.5 out of 5 stars.
