THE BOOK OF ELI written review

Imagine that you are still alive in a world gone mad following a nuclear world war. What would your reason be to live and what would you do to survive? That’s the premise of the excellent film The Book Of Eli. Brilliant acting led by Denzel Washington, first-class direction by the Hughes Brothers and amazing cinematography by Don Burgess bring the gut-wrenching story to life creating a stunner for science fiction and action movie lovers alike.

MY TOP 10 FILMS for 2009

If you think picking the best films for any one given year is easy, try 2009 with the most diverse genre’s, slick CGI magic and A-list actors taking on some amazing roles. Of the hundreds of movies I have seen this year only a little over 30 were memorable enough from which to consider for my following top ten. Dr. Watson I presume is one phrase that still comes up today, but was coined by Arthur Conan Doyle in his novels about Sherlock Holmes over half a century ago. Guy Ritchie takes Doyle’s books and creates a movie thriller starring a great cast, excellent sets and a very creative storyline for the screen. Easily in my top ten for 2009, the film is a must see.

ME AND ORSON WELLES

Cast Zac Efron (High School Musical) for the teens, an Orson Welles look alike to add some awe, throw in an A list actor and you have a hit. Well, that was my impression from the trailer of Me and Orson Welles, and after seeing the period drama there wasn’t much more. If you like impressions of famous people, with an above average storyline from the 1930’s, then this is you ticket to nostalgia.

INVICTUS

There are many true stores portrayed each year by filmmakers, but no one does it quite as good as Clint Eastwood. His ability to visualize the emotion, excitement, challenges, apprehension and anxieties in his characters has always amazed me and with Invictus he outdoes himself. Touching and exhilarating Invictus is a must see.

UP IN THE AIR

Film stars like George Clooney are at their best in movies like Up In The Air where they can show their dramatic ability in portraying an interesting character. I enjoyed the new Jason Reitman film, just as much as his Oscar nominated Juno . Take a flight with Up In The Air and you’ll enjoy the bumps and jolts of this modern day story.
