AFGHAN STAR

The movie Afghan Star, a documentary that depicts a return of pop culture to Afghanistan, takes a courageous peak into the lives of a people and culture that has been constantly changing. I liked the film very much because it reaches into the hearts of the Iranians who seem to be looking for freedom from oppression and the right to happiness through self-expression.

HARRY POTTER AND THE HALF-BLOOD PRINCE

Mystical, mushy and meager is the best way to describe the movie version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth in a series of seven books by J.K. Rowling. Not your ordinary kid friendly film, but more of an updated drama filled with romance, some adventure and sinister machinations.

I LOVE YOU BETH COOPER

Unfortunately I saw the trailer for I Love You Beth Cooper and was expecting a lame film with some bad acting. Well I must admit, the film was quite good, with some nice performances from Rust and Panettiere and witty support by the rest of the cast. If teen movies are your passion, then run to see this film.

JONAS BROTHERS: THE CONCERT EXPERIENCE

The extended DVD edition of the Jonas Brothers The Concert Experience is a nicely choreographed film targeted for female teens and tweens and it surely hits the mark. Covering most all their music, the film shows well on the home screen. Although it was more of a concert experience at the theatres, I found I had more control over the action for replays and pauses. The girls will probably drive you nuts with this one, so make sure you have a DVD player in their room.

BRUNO

He did it with Borat and now Sacha Baron Cohen does it again with Bruno an offensive, irritating, vulgar and provocative character that is sure to affront most everyone. But, although the film is contemptuous and irreverent, Cohen’s tongue in cheek performance had me laughing during all of the most outlandish film ever. Upon leaving the theatre however, I said to myself, did I just sit through that? If you are not easily insulted, don’t need a lot of plot and like your films very raunchy, then Bruno should be on your must see list.

THE STONING OF SORAYA M.

Finding myself shocked by some of the scenes in the true story of The Stoning of Soraya M, I realized that reviewing this film would not be simple. Wanting to let everyone know that this is an important film however does make it easier. I found the film much like The Passion of the Christ where you just want to say STOP, this can’t be happening.

ADORATION

An interesting film, Adoration brings an emotional story to the screen that although a good premise, fails to entertain. The storyline has a number of plot points that slowly come into play, each adding to a central character driven theme that vacillates so much that it looses it’s entertainment value.

CAMILA JAM (Nome Proprio)

Powerful and wonderfully performed, Camila Jam (Nome Proprio) stands out in my mind as one of the most dramatically entertaining films I have seen in years. Totally mesmerizing, I found myself glued to the screen much like a good book you just can’t put down. If you like films with great performances of subject matter that challenges your emotions, then I recommend Camila Jam.

ICE AGE: DAWN OF THE DINOSAURS

Extremely kid friendly, Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs makes its way into theaters providing a fun time for the youngsters. Adults will probably enjoy the film as long as they are accompanying children. If you are over the age of 12 and have already seen Ice Age and its sequel, then you may feel like this one is more of the same.

Public Enemies

Bringing a crime legend to the screen takes a good deal of research, good casting and impeccable direction and that all came together for Public Enemies. Director Michael Man not only captures the essence of John Dillinger in his movie, but that of Baby Face Nelson as well. Public Enemies is probably Mann’s best, no in my opinion, it is his best film to date.
