It seems like only yesterday that Disney made a fun little film called Toy Story, now after 15 years comes the conclusion to what I feel is one of the greatest franchises in the history of animation. With Toy Story 3 now on DVD/Blu-ray the gang turns in another great performance with all the original voices and a wonderful new adventure. I love the stories and comedy in all three, but this episode outshines and adds a tear of a fond farewell. It would be great if Disney/PIXAR came up with a fourth installment, but maybe it just wouldn’t be the same.
In this final story Andy has grown up and is heading for college. Not being able to take his toys along, his mom decides to donate the playthings to a local child’s daycare center. When the gang gets there everything looks like they have found Shangri-La. But, not everything is what they hoped for when the kids come to play; and there’s a new sheriff in town and it isn’t Woody. With their futures at steak, Andy’s toys lead by Buzz and Woody set up an escape plan.
The animation here is extremely good not only with the regulars, but with a bevy of new comers. I loved the funny sequences with Barbie and Ken, the home movie of Andy growing up, the ‘resetting’ of Buzz Lightyear, and much more. And, it’s fun for the whole family as it plays to several levels. Adults will have to wait till the kids go to bed so they can sneak the disk out to their living room and laugh at the mature comments and all the asides.
