Here’s an inspirational film that has good sportsmanship at the center of its storyline.  It’s called The Perfect Game and I believe the ideal film for the whole family.  The movie features some very good acting, directing and a nostalgic look at an historic baseball event.  If you have youngsters in your family or just want to see an uplifting film, then The Perfect Game is perfect for you.

Caesar celebrates with the team after winning in an early tournament

In 1957 Mexican Caesar Faz resigned from the St. Louis Cardinals as their locker room worker because they wouldn’t give him a chance at coaching.  Withdrawn due the decision Caesar goes back to his hometown in Monterrey, Mexico where he works in a factory.  On day a young boy wakens him with noise caused by his throwing a makeshift baseball near the shack he calls home.  Challenged by the boy and others who know of his ability to coach, he takes on a group of kids to form a Little League baseball team.  From there it’s history winning local tournaments and getting a shot at the championship in Williamsport and a final game that will live in Little League history.

I liked the way they handled the film that shows determination, resistance to discrimination and gives inspiration to all ages and walks of life.  If you have a child that dreams of playing a sport someday then take him/her to see the film and bring the rest of the family so they can feel good too.

William Dear (Angels in the Outfield) directs the film with confidence in his young actors, all of which are fairly new to the big screen.  Giving them

most of the screen time with a lot of kid friendly dialogue, Dear brings some heartfelt moments to what could have been just another docudrama.  Instead he treats us to an uplifting movie that is memorable and encouraging.

The Perfect Game is rated PG for some thematic elements including discrimination by some Texas town folks showing racial prejudice was widespread during the era.

FINAL ANALYSIS: A very good film for youngsters and oldsters alike. Play Ball! (4 of 5 Palm Trees)
