There is fun afoot in the newly remastered release of an old Disney favorite on DVD The Great Mouse Detective.  The DVD provides a more colorful and sharper image.  Still one of the most entertaining from Disney’s vault, the movie is a great adventure for the whole family.

The story centers on Olivia Flaversham and young female mouse who gets lost in London when her father gets kidnapped by Professor Ratigan (note that this character is sinister and may be a little frightening to the very young).  But, she gets Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson on the case and the adventure begins that unlocks the mystery.

The animated film is quite nostalgic since it features the voice of Basil Rathbone from the original cast that made the live action movies so adults should get a kick out of as well.  Lively, the film moves along at a pretty good clip keeping the excitement at a high pace.  The only downside may be Ratigan and his henchmen who get a little scary for young tikes, especially the very beginning when Flaversham is kidnapped.  But alls well that ends well and this film certainly does.

Bonus features include a quick So You Think You Can Sleuth game, a featurette on the Making of The Great Mouse Detective and more.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  A definite good addition to your Disney library. (4.5 of 5 Palm Trees)

Here is a nice companion piece DVD to The Great Mouse Detective for the very young.  The separate purchase DVD features the whole Winnie The Pooh gang as they solve the mystery of a shooting star.  From the modern animation that is very colorful, sharp and crisp to the elementary storyline, this DVD should have a lot of attention power.

The DVD also features an interactive Discovery Mode and a never-before-seen treat “Darby Gets Lemon, Makes Lemonade” and “Dancing With Darby”.

FINAL ANALYSIS: Get this one quick, especially if you have an energetic tyke around the house. (5 of 5 Palm Trees)
