Conventional Hollywood wisdom (for lack of a better word) holds that films featuring women in prominent roles don’t perform as well as male-centric movies at the box office. But a new report from the number-crunching website FiveThirtyEight indicates that movies that have significant female characters actually offer a better return on investment overall than films that don’t.        

A few nights ago, I finally caught up with watching the most recent Tweedledee and Tweedledum of action movies – “White House Down” and “Olympus Has Fallen.”

Starting next month, United Airlines will let users watch hundreds of movies and TV shows free on their laptops and Apple iOS mobile devices.        

The release of the Christian film “Son of God” this weekend kicks off an unusually large slate of wide-release religious movies for 2014. Soon to come are “Noah” and “Exodus,” followed by the Christian-themed “Heaven Is for Real.” Talk about a flood.

It may be easier to experience quality silent films these days than at any time since Al Jolson insisted to audiences, “You ain’t seen nothing yet.”
