CSI: Crime Scene Investigation – Grave Danger (Blu-ray)

Recommended In an unusual but not surprising move, CBS/Paramount has opted to release a single (if feature-length) episode of CSI: Crime Scene Investigation to Blu-ray. The reason is obvious: “Grave Danger” was directed by Quentin Tarantino, who’s also credited with the story, while the teleplay is credited to Naren Shankar, Anthony E

Malcolm X (Blu-ray)

Recommended THE FILM: Please Note: The screen captures used here are taken from the 2005 DVD , not the Blu-ray edition under review. I can clearly recall the baseball cap-centered hype surrounding the 1992 release of Spike Lee’s Malcolm X .

Belle de Jour: Criterion Collection (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended THE MOVIE: Please Note: The images used here are promotional stills not taken directly from the Blu-Ray. Luis Bu uel’s 1967 adaptation of the Joseph Kessel novel Belle de Jour may be tame by today’s standards in terms of what we actually see on screen, but the icy tale of sexual peccadilloes and alternative pleasures still has a psychological resonance, bolstered by the …

Drive (Blu-ray)

Recommended And the award for “Most Overrated Film of 2011” goes to…well, something else, but Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive might be somewhere down the list. To be fair, this suspenseful character study has plenty of highlights: a great soundtrack, solid performances and a thick atmosphere, for starters. Hell, the opening sequence alone is almost worth the price of admission.

The Tuskegee Airmen (Blu-ray)

Recommended THE MOVIE: Hmmm, I wonder what could have prompted HBO Home Video to upgrade their 1995 TV movie The Tuskegee Airmen for a Blu-ray release? Looking at their slate for January, we see that it’s being accompanied by the new performance film Thurgood (starring Airmen ‘s Laurence Fishburne) and their acclaimed 1991 film The Josephine Baker Story ; some kind of pre-Black History Month …

Lips of Blood (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended The Movie: One of Jean Rollin’s more interesting films, 1975s Levres De Sang (better known in North America as Lips Of Blood , which is how it was released on DVD a few years back from Image/Redemption and how it’s being re-released again through Redemption and Kino with this Blu-ray debut!) begins with the simple image of a van heading through the night towards an eerie old …

Blackthorn (Blu-ray)

Recommended THE MOVIE: On the way out of my first viewing of Mateo Gil’s Blackthorn , I overheard someone calling it a “standard Western”–as if that would be a bad thing, if there were any such thing anymore. Making a Western these days is anything but standard; they’re enough of a novelty that it’s still worth being thankful when we get one, and not dismissing it for being less than a …

Film Socialisme (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended THE FILM: Please Note: The images used here are promotional stills and are not taken from the Blu-ray edition under review. There is a scene in Godard’s turning-point 1965 film Pierrot le fou in which stars Anna Karina and Jean-Paul Belmondo perform an impromptu “play” for American tourists in which an event as vast, urgent, and serious as the Vietnam War–including all its …
