Sony Pictures Entertainment has brought on a veteran with a track record of successful big-budget movies to pump new life into Hollywood's fourth-ranked film studio and help distance it from a cyberattack that rattled the entertainment industry.
This week we get a mix of indie movies and mainstream movies, movies in English and movies in foreign languages, movies about heroes and movies about ordinary people. Quite often, all of these people are misfits or outcasts of some kind, never quite sure of how they fit in. Or, in the case of one creepy chiller, the characters rudely discover that they don’t fit in quite as well as they thought …
The Oscars will be announced this weekend, and so theaters are filling up with the typical “January and February†throwaway stuff ( 50 Shades of Grey being the exception only because it was tied to Valentine’s Day). Movie-streaming services, on the other hand, are highlighting an interesting mix of heavy and light.
Whenever one writes a review, it is tradition to give the reader a run down of the film’s plot. The Spierig Brothers’ Predestination makes that insanely difficult, because it spoils the hell out of the movie, a fact that is further illustrated in the special features were the cast also tries to describe what the film is about
