Pride (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended The Movie: Pride is one of the best examples of the “Conservative working class Brits face socially controversial change and learn to grow as a result” British comedies pioneered by the likes of Full Monty , Billy Elliot and Calendar Girls . Its simple yet effective messages of tolerance, compassion and the importance of solidarity are delivered with an infectiously positive …

Union Station (Blu-ray)

Recommended When Joyce Willecombe (Nancy Olson) boards a train to Chicago, she's not expecting anything particularly exciting to happen, but as the train is arriving at one of the stations before her destination, she spots a car on the adjacent road, speeding to keep up with the train. Two men exit the car and board the train, but they enter through different doorways, and act as if they don't …

Stonehearst Asylum (Blu-ray)

Skip It THE FILM: Click an image to view Blu-ray screenshot with 1080p resolution. Director Brad Anderson's ( The Machinist , The Call ) clumsily titled Stonehearst Asylum is based on Edgar Allen Poe's short story “The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether.” Short stories tend to make narratively challenged feature films, and Anderson draws out the material to a very long 112 minutes. The …

Avenging Force (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended The Movie: The Cannon Films action classic Avenging Force got a DVD release in Europe but never got upgraded from VHS in North American for whatever reason, despite the fact that it was and remains a very popular entry in their filmography. Kino-Lorber makes up for past transgressions with this release, a bit of a special edition, really, and it's about time.

2014 World Series (Blu-ray)

Recommended The Movie: I recently saw the 2014 World Series film and enjoyed it enough to the point that I wanted to revisit some of the San Francisco Giants playoff run. Thankfully, A&E, Lionsgate and Major League Baseball video helped sate the appetite of this neutral of the Giants and Kansas City Royals and pored over the World Series Collector's Set diligently.

Into the Woods (The Original Broadway Production) (Blu-ray)

Recommended Note : Please see the audio section of this review for an update on the Blu-ray's DTS-HD 2.0 stereo track. Originally hitting the stage in 1986, Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine's musical Into the Woods is a comic collision of famous fairy tales, bringing Jack and his magic beanstalk into the same story as Cinderella, Rapunzel, and Little Red Riding Hood, among others. As Disney's …

The Emerald Forest (Blu-ray)

Recommended The Movie: I remember enjoying director John Boorman's unusual, Amazon-set action drama The Emerald Forest on VHS shortly after the film's original 1985 release. Lushly filmed in the rainforests of Brazil, this emotionally charged story of a father searching for son abducted by natives ten years prior was a risky, highly personal project for the director (who also produced).

Star Trek: The Next Generation – Season Seven (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended Click here for audio accompaniment, because why not? Just like twenty years ago, watching the seventh and final season of Star Trek: The Next Generation on Blu-ray is bittersweet: the show had an amazing run and it's been a blast to revisit in high definition, but this still marks the end of our crew's small screen adventures.

Dolphin Tale 3D (Blu-ray)

Recommended Note : To promote the release of Dolphin Tale 2 , DVDTalk was sent this copy of Dolphin Tale . However, this is not a new 3D Blu-ray set; it is the same edition released back in 2011. Sawyer Nelson (Nathan Gamble) is a bit of a loner.

Automata (Blu-ray)

Rent It The Film: Presenting the idea of artificial intelligence as a considerable form of self-aware life, as a sentient and evolving creation both different and similar to that of humans, has proven to be a tricky endeavor for Hollywood. Typically, those philosophical ideas manifest better in text where they're given room to ruminate without the concerns of pacing or sustaining a visual …
