INTO THE ABYSS review by John Delia

I’m not really fond of evaluating films based on political questions, religious beliefs or social values so with Into the Abyss my review will be short and sweet. The film puts the capital punishment question of shall we put a murderer to death even if we know he did the killing? What gets left out of the film however is the alternative; shall we torture the person the rest of his life by keeping him alive in a prison cell? Although Director Werner Herzog claims the film is not about the death penalty, he lets his audience be the judge.

DVD Review : The Killing – Series 1

Since its first airing in the UK, Danish show Forbrydelsen – known as The Killing in English-speaking countries, though its title actually translates as “The Crime” – has been one of those enigmatic shows that I’ve heard about from excited friends who tell me to check it out, but never been able to find on local schedules.

FAST FIVE on Blu-ray, review by John Delia

Fast Five on Blu-ray/DVD becomes more than just a movie when you can control the film, special bonus features and other unique apps. The movie is definitely a repeat thing in my house and I can see myself watching it over again from time to time. If you like your action like I do, than Universal’s Fast Five should be in your action collection.

GENIUS ON HOLD review by John Delia

Not all documentaries can make a mark in society, but I found Genius On Hold a remarkable film that takes a crack at big business and proves positive. Genius On Hold is eye opening, courageous and extraordinary. It’s a father and son story of fate that intertwines life struggles, crime and monopolies, which decide their future. If there’s one documentary you see this year, make it be Genius On Hold.

ANIMAL KINGDOM written review

Looking for a gritty crime drama that stops at nothing to startle, evoke ire and create tension? Well look no further than Animal Kingdom, a crude tale of a disturbed crime family. The production is very good with terrific acting, direction and cinematography.

THE TOWN written review

The Oscar race has just added a new candidate called The Town, a gritty gangster film that heats up the screen with crime and romance. The film gets top marks from this critic in all departments, acting, directing, cinematography and storyline. Although some may say that the film has flaws, I can’t find a contender this year that can boast a more perfect entrant into Hollywood’s most prestigious awards race.

THE GIRL WHO PLAYED WITH FIRE guest review

In the first film, The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, Larsson’s story and characters were artfully condensed down to a manageable size and the director and cast were able to achieve a logical, articulate, and breathtaking chase against time to solve a 40-year-old cold case, while introducing two instant classic screen characters. A thoroughly entertaining film, I highly recommend seeing it (now out on DVD).

AJAMI written review

Nominated for an Academy Award for best foreign film, Ajami comes to American theatres with a stark depiction of what culture clash is like in the Middle East. I liked the film because it gets into the grit of crime, confrontation, discrimination and hatred that can make life a hell. Well-acted, directed and presented Ajami is a must see for adults.
