Malcolm X (Blu-ray)

Recommended THE FILM: Please Note: The screen captures used here are taken from the 2005 DVD , not the Blu-ray edition under review. I can clearly recall the baseball cap-centered hype surrounding the 1992 release of Spike Lee’s Malcolm X .

Outrage: Way of the Yakuza (Blu-ray)

Skip It THE MOVIE: Please Note: The images used here are from promotional materials and are not taken from the Blu-Ray edition under review. Imagine a version of Goodfellas where a hired scissor man took Scorsese’s film back into the editing bay to make it less arty and more commercial.

Drive (Blu-ray)

Recommended And the award for “Most Overrated Film of 2011” goes to…well, something else, but Nicolas Winding Refn’s Drive might be somewhere down the list. To be fair, this suspenseful character study has plenty of highlights: a great soundtrack, solid performances and a thick atmosphere, for starters. Hell, the opening sequence alone is almost worth the price of admission.

The Tuskegee Airmen (Blu-ray)

Recommended THE MOVIE: Hmmm, I wonder what could have prompted HBO Home Video to upgrade their 1995 TV movie The Tuskegee Airmen for a Blu-ray release? Looking at their slate for January, we see that it’s being accompanied by the new performance film Thurgood (starring Airmen ‘s Laurence Fishburne) and their acclaimed 1991 film The Josephine Baker Story ; some kind of pre-Black History Month …

Traffic: Criterion Collection (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended THE MOVIE: Please Note: The screengrabs used here are from the standard-definition DVD released in 2002, not from the Blu-Ray. It’s hard to believe it’s been ten years since Steven Soderbergh’s Traffic landed in cinemas.

Though popular when it was new, it would seem an awfully hard sell in 2012 – perhaps distributor Fox is betting consumers will confuse it with Warner Home Video’s The Music Man (1962). Usually deep catalog titles like this are tied to …

The Big Country (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended THE MOVIE: My first encounter with The Big Country was a couple of years ago. I wasn’t familiar with William Wyler’s 1958 film until George Clooney was talking about how he borrowed a scene from it for Leatherheads .

Lips of Blood (Blu-ray)

Highly Recommended The Movie: One of Jean Rollin’s more interesting films, 1975s Levres De Sang (better known in North America as Lips Of Blood , which is how it was released on DVD a few years back from Image/Redemption and how it’s being re-released again through Redemption and Kino with this Blu-ray debut!) begins with the simple image of a van heading through the night towards an eerie old …
