Wacky spy comedies are fun, especially if they have an exciting plot with many surprises and an unexpected outcome. The movie Spy Intervention has a story that’s a bit different than the usual, it’s much like saving Queen Elizabeth (The Naked Gun) or stopping evil (Spy Hard) or even 2015’s Spy with Melissa McCarthy tracking down an arms dealer. Spy Intervention doesn’t have the star power to make it a blockbuster, but the actors try very hard to please. Not hilarious, but certainly very funny, the movie fills the void that has been absent of late.
Super spy Corey Gage (Drew Van Acker) has just botched his assignment of finding Egan Doyle (Max Sylvestri), the world’s master terrorist, when he literally bumps into Pam Grayson (Poppy Delevingne) in a mall. Smitten by the beautiful woman, who’s an ordinary cosmetic clerk, he loses his chance to take down the fanatic who has threatened to blow up the world with a secret weapon. Realizing he failed, yet feels that it was divine intervention, he asks Pam for some time with him to get acquainted. After a quick romantic interlude he goes back to his handler Smuts (Blake Anderson) and resigns.
It’s a rash decision, but he starts to adjust to married life until he gets surprised with an intervention by Smuts and his fellow spies to try and get him back into the service. Director Drew Mylrea moves his action comedy along a very nice speed, and that’s a good thing. He only stops now and then to show the romantic side and then turns it back up with some lengthy spy comedy. While the film is low budget in terms of today’s costs, and it shows, Spy Intervention is still worth the watch.
Spy Intervention has not been rated by the MPAA, but it does rude language, mild violence and sexual innuendos. It’s more of a guilty pleasure for fans of the genre than a blockbuster spy comedy. Remember Airplane? It’s something like that. The film also has plenty of eye candy for both the guys and the gals.
FINAL ANALYSIS: A guilty pleasure witty action comedy. (3 out of 5 Stars)
