Review by Ian Delia

If you can remember all the hit teen blockbusters like the “Divergent” or “Maze runner” series, then this movie Kin will be no surprise. From the reaction by the audience in some of the pivotal scenes, I could see they weren’t impressed. I agree with their response to the film as I wasn’t very interested, but I wasn’t disappointed either.

There is somewhat of an interesting plot, but it’s wrapped around the wrong people. So the movie storyline keeps you watching and hoping for the excitement to peak, but that only happens at the very end. You will be waiting for thrilling part, and let me tell you it is good, but it lasts only 5 minutes of the film.

A young boy named Elijah “Myles Truitt” is a ravager. He would break into old, abandon houses looking for scraps to sell. But one day when he goes to the vacant parking garage he sees something he should have seen before. As Elijah begins to look around he finds a “futuristic” gun. What happens next is he gets himself and his brother Jimmy into a whole lot of trouble running away from those who would want the gun and finding it’s their only salvation.

In the “cinematic world” of the recent PG13 movies, they give half of the story and then it begs for a sequel. I won’t be surprised if this movie does not do well at the box office. Same thing goes for the possible sequel to the story.

This story was made to keep the audiences intrigued, so they brought in James Franco. Here he’s this gangster character that’s after Elijah’s brother Jimmy Soliniski (Jack Reynor) who owes Franco’s character Taylor Balik 60 thousand dollars. It seems that Franco happens to be one of the most used actors nowadays. And in Kin his character, Taylor, seems fairly similar to his role as the gangster in “Spring Breakers”.

Kin has been rated PG-13 for its use of intense action containing gun violence, language and inappropriate gestures. There is also some suggestive material and teen drinking. But as I indicated earlier “It wasn’t very interesting, but I wasn’t disappointed.”
