Review by John Delia, Sr.

Turning back the clock to the Korean Conflict, the movie Devotion tells a thrilling and heartfelt story of war and prejudice. The powerfully compelling film brings the discrimination to light early on and as the movie progresses however, the true story shows how mislead a society can become.

The era of the early 1950’s was a trying time having lost many military in World War II and was still emerging out of the devastation that war created. With conflict at a high level in Korea, America had been stretched thin with fighting forces and the air attack ability with aircraft and the pilots to fly them. Only the best were commissioned to fly from aircraft carriers and one was a determined black pilot that had more spunk and grit to make it. His story, Jessie Brown (Jonathan Majors), had a dream to fulfill as a fighter pilot and he went against all odds to fulfill that vision.

The film evolves around Brown as he puts his life on the line for his fellow flyers. Director JD Dillard lays out the plot with a sharp knowledge of early air fighter planes and their contribution to performing in conflicts. His actors are extremely good providing realistic characters who depict the camaraderie of the pilots verses the naval crew’s racial bigotry. Quickly mellowing the conflict within the corps, Dillard puts things into perspective as he dives into the explosive fight in North Korea.
