Batman, Spider-Man, ‘Hunger Games,’ ‘Phantom Menace’ in 3-D, ‘Prometheus’ and more films are on the way.
“Yes, but what was the best film for grown-ups?” a friend asked me when I told him “Hugo” was my favorite movie of the year.
Over the past year, Washington Post movie critics have watched hundreds of hours of film. But only 12 movies received our top rating, including the George Clooney drama “The Descendants,†the captivating baseball story “Moneyball†and the Ryan Gosling breakout “Drive.†There are no new movies opening in theaters this week, but many of the year’s four-star films are on DVD.
Some reviews originate at newspapers that do not award star ratings.

All movies are 2011 releases unless otherwise noted. Availability: DVD | Blu-ray | Both Blu-ray and DVD Steven Soderbergh’s first dramatic film in two years (which kicks off an especially prolific period for the director, who has two more movies arriving in the next six months) was this fall’s well-reviewed thriller about a deadly global pandemic.
