This year has hatched some entertaining buddy cop/espionage comedic action adventure films like Cop Out, Knight & Day and The Killers and now the summer offers  a real belly laugher called The Other Guys starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg.  The movie touches all the right bases, shatters the funny bone and makes silly a good word.

Allen (Ferrell) and Terry (Wahlberg) are mismatched detectives

Allen Gamble (Ferrell) has been promoted to the Detective division although he has had no experience in the field, coming from the forensic accounting department.  His partner Terry Hoitz (Wahlberg) is a contentious law officer but has come under scrutiny when he accidentally shot New York Yankee great Derek Jeter in the leg.  The two are a mismatched pair and have been getting little or at best mundane assignments.   When the two get a routine assignment that turns into a hot potato Allen and Terry start bungling their way into a crime-fighting duo with a lot of surprises.

Wahlberg and Ferrell work well together mainly because the two are complete opposites.  Much like Bruce Willis and Tracy Morgan in Cop Out, these two guys bounce off each other creating comedy out of the ordinary.  While Wahlberg’s character feels trapped in hell due to his unfortunate incident that tied him to the new guy, Ferrell’s good doobie character just prods along getting the entire rift from the other detectives in the precinct.

The Other Guys is all about the dialogue delivery and this script keeps the two main actors moving into one unfortunate situation and another each as hilarious as the first.  Director Adam McKay keeps the dialogue release snappy and contagiously funny with the stars making the pace fast and crazy.  Sure a lot of the film is silly but that’s what makes this film work.  Although the scene topper where Willis and Morgan have Seann William Scott in the back of their car in Cop Out has to be the funniest of the year so far, Wahlberg and Ferrell come in a very close second in a scene where Allen introduces his wife Sheila (Eva Mendes) to Terry.  Mendes plays it so straight that I could not stop laughing during the conversation between them.

The movie is rated PG-13 for crude and sexual content, language, violence, and some drug material so be very cautious in allowing immature children to view the film.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  A hilarious cop flick with high fives all around. (5 of 5)
