karatekid_1sht_thumb SonyColumbiaThipredators_smallteasers year’s summer films are not as prestigious as the past few years, but still pack a punch.  The major films are sequels or remakes like Iron Man 2, Toy Story 3, Shrek Forever After, A-Team (TV), Sex and the City 2, Cats & Dogs: The revenge of Kitty Galore, Twilight Eclipse, Nanny McPhee and the Big Bang, Robin Hood, Step Up 3D, Predators, The Karate Kid and even a re-realease Grease (Sing-Along).

It seems that Hollywood is sidestepping new material for scripts that keep the money flowing.  Why take a chance on a creative new film when you can cash in on a big hit from a past year?  It seems to me that the complacency can deliver a punch below the belt if America starts to get tired of the same old, same old.

Like previous years the month of May gets included in the summer film releases and starting out of the gate are four big race horses, Iron Man 2, Robin Hood, Prince of Persia: Sands of Time and Sex and the City 2.  Just weeks apart from each other, they will be vying for huge weekend box office takes.  Three of the starters are action oriented and will definitely get the lion’s share, but don’t count out Sex and the City as they have a huge viewer base and will probably take a chunk out of the May 27th weekend.

Here are thumbnails of major films of the summer, although most release dates are set in stone, studios tend to change dates depending on a lot of economic factors.

ANALYSIS: I usually stay away from political dramas, but it involves sports and I love sports movies, so this is a coin toss.

takers Hayden ChristensenTAKERS– August 20, 2010

The film takes you into the world of a notorious group of criminals (Idris Elba, Paul Walker, T.I., Chris Brown, Hayden Christensen and Michael Ealy) who continue to baffle police by pulling off perfectly executed bank robberies. They are in and out like clockwork, leaving no evidence behind and laying low between heists. But when they attempt to pull off one last job with more money at stake than ever before, the crew may find their plans interrupted by a hardened detective (Matt Dillon) who is hell-bent on solving the case. ANALYSIS: Good cast and plot, but it may be a little predictable. Please make there be a twist in the plot.

going the distanceGOING THE DISTANCE– August 27, 2010

Erin’s (Drew Barrymore) wry wit and unfiltered frankness charm newly single Garrett (Justin Long) over beer, bar trivia and breakfast the next morning. Their chemistry sparks a full-fledged summer fling, but neither expects it to last once Erin heads home to San Francisco and Garrett stays behind for his job in New York City. But when six weeks of romping through the city inadvertently become meaningful, neither is sure they want it to end. And while Garrett’s friends, Box (Jason Sudeikis) and Dan (Charlie Day), joke about his pre-flight calorie-cutting and his full-time relationship with his cell phone, they don’t like losing their best drinking buddy to yet another rocky romance. At the same time, Erin’s high-strung, overprotective married sister, Corrine (Christina Applegate), wants to keep Erin from heading down an all-too-familiar road. But despite the opposite coasts, the nay-saying friends and family, and a few unexpected temptations, the couple just might have found something like love, and with the help of a lot of texting, sexting and late-night phone calls, they might actually go the distance. ANALYSIS: Ho Hum, Wish Barrymore would make another Charlie’s Angels sequel.
