About the Play:
Sleepwalk, a 40-minute play written by Emmy-winning playwright William Mastrosimone, is meant to be performed by teens for teens. Creatively blending humor, pathos and imagination, the play tells the story of Dillon, a young woman flirting with suicide. With input of mental health professionals, it was written to foster open dialogue about depression and suicide and remove the stigma associated with seeking professional help.
As the curtain opens, Dillon who has already written a suicide note, enters a dream world populated by characters who are personifications of the emotional turmoil she, and many teens, experience. The story follows her on her inner journey from impulse to reason.

About the Topic:
The teen years are loaded with stress. It’s not unusual for teenagers to experience problems with their mental health. In fact, recent studies have shown that one in five has some type of mental problem each year. But for some, there doesn’t seem to be a way out of a situation they see as overwhelming. Though depression is treatable and suicide is often preventable, they may be too embarrassed or fearful to seek it out. Eighty percent of depressed teenagers do not get treatment. Only a third of the time are their problems known to their parents or any adult.
Sadly, suicide is now the third leading cause of death among teens. Depression can be more dangerous in teens than adults because kids’ impulsivity make them five times more likely to attempt suicide. The more they know about what’s going on inside them, the more they are able to discuss it, the more they know what’s available to help them, the easier it will be for them.
