The movie I Am Number Four falls somewhere between an episode of the X-Men and X Files with all the excitement, special creatures and cunning storyline. The action starts early and continues, following an introduction of subsequent characters, providing an adrenaline kick for action junkies. I like I Am Number Four even though it could have easily been a cable film on FX. I wouldn’t doubt that it’s where we will find the next sequel.
John Smith (Alex Pettyfer), a high school teen has arrived in small Ohio town having been on the run from a ruthless enemy that has come to earth to destroy him. His guardian Henri (Timothy Olyphant) classified as a warrior on the planet they are from, has been put in charge of protecting John. Following an incident involving John emitting special powers, Henri informs him of his purpose on Earth and that he’s the target of relentless killers. When he falls for a classmate, Sarah (Dianna Agron), his judgment gets clouded and becomes a problem for the task at hand.
Performances by Pettyfer and Olyphant are extremely good making their characters intriguing and suspenseful. The situations they deal with in the script require a big range of emotions and agility and both are up to the challenge. When the fighting begins the choreographers have the warriors working with realistic movies that energize the battle scenes.
Director D.J. Caruso keeps the momentum of the film moving along at a fast clip, throwing just enough character development and a romantic interlude to keep the audience’s interest. The ferocious aliens, their evil killer pets and special laser weapons add thrills to the heart pumping fight scenes. And with producer Michael Bay on board, you just know there are a lot of eye-popping explosions.
I Am Number Four is rated PG-13 for intense sequences of violence and action, and for language. Hot chick alert! Theresa Palmer who plays the awesome number 6 gives a killer performance while wielding her hot body and fiery cycle at some very angry aliens.
