Striking, imaginative and well acted, Conduit a short film, delivers a strong moving statement.   Based on an accidental death, this psychological drama takes a look at living with tragedy and an unexpected intervention.

Barbie Castro as Dr. Susan Peck

Con•duit (n): a conveyance.  Set in the home of Dr. Susan Peck (Barbie Castro) a noted heart surgeon, the story finds her writing a letter to a loved one.  It’s not an ordinary letter that may convey her love for someone, or even one that may show her desire to obtain a reply.  Distraught over an accident she opens her heart, mind, body and soul.  When an unexpected caller delivers a strange message, Dr. Peck becomes suspicious of the messenger’s intentions.

Director Alyn Darnay handles the short script admirably well. In addition to obtaining exemplary performances by the cast, he puts a lot of entertainment into a limited period of time. Anytime a script involves setting a mood that must be conveyed to an audience in order for the story to work, there are many opportunities for failure, but Darnay makes his piece successfully involving and intriguing.

If I were to identify a weakness, it’s the limited plot due to the desired length of the production.  Much like the Sixth Sense, it contains the wow factor.  With Conduit, Darnay achieves a reasonable amount of gasp in the time he gets allotted, just thirteen minutes and four seconds, but rolls the dice on a chance of leaving his audience craving more.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  A quickie that’s tricky. (B+)
