The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus
From director Terry Gilliam and starring Heath Ledger, Johnny Depp, Colin Farrell, Jude Law, Christopher Plummer, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus is a fantastical morality tale, set in the present day.
It tells the story of Dr Parnassus and his extraordinary ‘Imaginarium’, a traveling show where members of the audience get an irresistible opportunity to choose between light and joy or darkness and gloom.
Blessed with the extraordinary gift of guiding the imaginations of others, Dr Parnassus is cursed with a dark secret. Long ago he made a bet with the devil, Mr Nick, in which he won immortality. Many centuries later, on meeting his one true love, Dr Parnassus made another deal with the devil, trading his immortality for youth, on condition that when his first-born reached its 16th birthday he or she would become the property of Mr Nick. Valentina is now rapidly approaching this ‘coming of age’ milestone and Dr Parnassus is desperate to protect her from her impending fate. Mr Nick arrives to collect but, always keen to make a bet, renegotiates the wager. Now the winner of Valentina will be determined by whoever seduces the first five souls.
Enlisting a series of wild, comical and compelling characters in his journey, Dr Parnassus promises his daughter’s hand in marriage to the man that helps him win. In this captivating, explosive and wonderfully imaginative race against time, Dr Parnassus must fight to save his daughter in a never-ending landscape of surreal obstacles – and undo the mistakes of his past once and for all…

Jonathan Edwards in Concert
Duo Magazine and The Culture Network present Jonathan Edwards in concert. Edwards burst on the music scene nearly 40 years ago with the mega-hit “Sunshine,” a cheerful anthem of defiance written at the height of the Vietnam War era. Today he remains as original, energetic and relevant as he was all those years ago, with a voice as strong and memorable as ever. In the intervening years, besides charting another hit with the harmonica-happy “Shanty,” Edwards has shared the stage with B.B. King, Emmylou Harris, Rod Stewart, Willie Nelson, Loggins and Messina, the Judds, James Taylor, Roger Miller, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, the “Seldom Scene” and others. This past summer, he was featured on the “Hippiefest” national tour that also included Flo & Eddie of The Turtles, Melanie, Janis Ian, Joey Molland of Badfinger and Eric Burden and the Animals. He has recorded 15 albums to date, including the award-winning childrens album “Little Hands”; narrated and performed in the documentary series, “Cruising Americas’ Waterways”; starred on Broadway, and is currently completing a score for a major motion picture. But it is his live concerts that have collectively drawn an audience of millions to hear not just a performer and songwriter, but a story teller whose music and charisma touch both the heart and the funny bone, connecting with fans of all ages.

Falstaff, Verdi (Opera in Cinema)
With Falstaff, Verdi bid a magnificent farewell to opera. He chose, however, a genre that he wasn’t familiar with: the comic opera. His librettist, Boito, gave Verdi a text, adapted from a Shakespeare play, that allowed him to express all his skills and power, giving the musicians as important role as the characters. Verdi brought something new to opera at a time when his prior works had already become classics. This last Verdi opera was first played in front of an enthusiastic Milanese public and ended Verdi’s work on an happy note.
To interpret the title role of Sir John Falstaff, Ruggero Raimondi, a masterful actor and exceptional artist with a powerful and colorful voice, comes back to Liège for the inauguration of the Royal Opera House. Paolo Arrivabeni conducts this phenomenal production.
