The emotionally charged All She Can will be landing in Miami as part of The Maya Indie Film Series touring select cities in America.  The film opens at AMC Sunset Place 24 for a week starting September 23 along with six other Latino themed movies.  It’s their last stop on a tour that started at Los Angeles and New York in July.

Julio Cesar Cedillo as coach and CorinaCalderon as Luz

All She Can has a lot of heart, poise and guts.  It delves into the minds of young girls who feel they are lost in the mire of a mundane life with no way out.  If you enjoy films that take on subjects that affect society then do not miss this film,

The story centers on Luz (Corina Calderon) a high school senior who has her sights of graduating and getting out of a life that’s going nowhere for her.  Filled with a whole bag of angst brought on by an absent father, a dead-end town and not enough money to get her to the University of Texas, her inspirational dream of escape has been cut off.

Her only hope is getting a scholarship offered as part of the state weightlifting championship in which she’s on track to compete. Standing in her way is a metabolism that keeps her fighting weight gain, a rebel boyfriend that’s no inspiration and an incapable family support group. When her boyfriend offers Luz an illegal way up to the finals, Luz finds herself in a quandary.

The acting here by the newcomer Calderon is extremely good under the direction of first timer Amy Wendel.  Her intensity in the role, especially during the weightlifting competition and a scene of extreme disappointment with her future hanging in the balance are a camera feast.  In support the acting of Julia Vera, as her brokenhearted grandmother that feels helpless in Luz situation, can only be labeled as outstanding.

But the film is not without a downside.  The direction, while even, does not take chances and comes off as just another ‘After School Special’ rather than a work of dramatic art.  Wendel wraps her story in a neat little package with a predictable pink bow on top, not the kind of ending that the previous hour plus movie pictured.

The film is unrated but contains scenes of violence, some language and drugs.  Do not see the trailer to this movie as it tells all.

FINAL ANALYSIS: A lot of lessons here but only average grade worthy. (C )
