You’d be hard-pressed to find any horror fan or expert in the genre who would disagree with the statement that the 1925 version of “The Phantom of the Opera” starring Lon Chaney was the first big-production horror film. The first great horror film overall would probably go to 1922’s “Nosferatu,” but “Phantom” was still much bigger when comparing the scale of production.
