One of the most explosive films in 3D opens with a bang.  Resident Evil: Afterlife lives up to its reputation of burning up the screen in this fourth installment based on a video game.  Packed with heat, chills and hostile battles in what I feel is one of the best live action 3D presentations this year.  It’s a thrill ride with zombies in massive numbers that kept my neck hair standing on end.

In this sequel we find Alice breaking away from the Umbrella Organization with the help of her clones.  She finally reaches her destination in Alaska, only to find out that those that escaped to the much-believed safest place on Earth were not there.  Torn by the idea that there are no survivors of the deadly plague that turns humans into zombies, she roams the area lost in disbelief.  As fate would have it, Clara, one of the survivors pops up in an amnesia state.  After removing a robotic injector from her chest, Alice starts to piece things together leading the two to Los Angeles.

Actually the film is not really about the storyline, but the way it is presented.  Using some outstanding CGI coupled with amazing 3D enhancement, the movie gave me the feeling that I was right in the middle of the action.  And the action blew me away with continuous kick-butt fighting against an inhuman foe that is relentless and ugly.  The creatures from the Resident Evil: Extinction are back more fearsome than ever, but the biggest zombie brute to ever hit the screen wields an axe the size of a car and does some major damage all in 3D.

Resident Evil: Afterlife has Paul W.S. Anderson at the helm, the guy who gave us the first Resident Evil, Alien Vs. Predator and Death Race.  You should be familiar with his fine horror work and he uses all his energy in this flick so you won’t be disappointed.

I would be remiss if I didn’t laude the acting of some of the major players in the film.  I’m a huge fan of two action females, Angelina Jolie and Milla Jovovich, both hot and fearless while getting the job done.  Here Milla shows her stuff while shooting, flipping, kicking, punching and stomping more zombies than she did in the first three Resident Evil films.  And, she also can get dramatic as she does in a couple of scenes that although slows down the action, gives the audience to rest prior to her next big battle.

Resident Evil: Afterlife is rated R for sequences of strong violence and language.  The brutality comes often, the blood splashes in your eyes, body parts are strewn all over, bullets explode through bodies, buildings collapse, hoards of hideous zombie creatures dominate the screen and mayhem is projected all in ‘coming at you’ 3D.  So get a babysitter for this horror thriller as only the mature should sit in on this one.

FINAL ANALYSIS:  A thrill a minute. (4.5 of 5)
