Up until now I had thought that the Complete Collection of Friday the 13th held the record for most blood, gore and sick ways to die, that is until I saw Piranha 3D.  Some may challenge me on this point, but I know they will lose.  If you like your films with a lot of dismemberment, flesh tearing, human entrails dangling, decapitations and more, then this sicko is right up your ally.  But, you may want to eat your popcorn early and use the empty as a barf bag.

There really isn’t a dramatic storyline except a premise.  Wonder if there was a crack in the bottom of a beautiful lake used for spring break which opened a tunnel to a prehistoric lake beneath.  Then out of the tunnel comes a huge swarm of flesh eating Piranha fish.  Well you get the picture, utter diabolical inescapable mayhem.

But, it could not be the bloodiest film ever but for the wizards of make-up, special effects, computer generated images and hundreds of realistically looking human dummies that break apart, slice ‘n dice, split open, pop eye balls, gush red goo and bare bones.  If you have seen the movies Jaws, Lake Placid, Final Destination or Great White then you know what you are in for, only on a much grander scale.

Of course a good acting crew and director (Alexandre Aja who directed The Hills Have Eyes) help a lot and the cast and crew of this film provides some touch and go moments that can give you nightmares.  Not to give too much away, but in one scene imagine yourself 50 feet or more deep in an underground lake and you come face to face with a horde of huge teeth.  Now imagine it again in 3D.

The film is rated R for sequences of strong bloody horror violence and gore, graphic nudity, sexual content, language and some drug use.  Not to mention disembowelments, alcohol use, floating genitals and depiction of underage drinking.

FINAL ANALYSIS: A horror thriller that’s not for the meek or easily frightened.  (4 of 5 for thrill seekers only)
