Blue Ruin follows Dwight (Macon Blair) a drifter who appears to live a peaceful life dumpster diving and living in his old beat up Pontiac Sedan when he abruptly returns to the place he calls home and begins his spree of revenge.
Writer and Director Jeremy Saulnier, director of the 2007 comic horror Murder Party and cinematographer on indie films Putty Hill and Septien, captures your attention with his second directorial debut Blue Ruin and its opening shots as the camera stays on Blair’s every move mostly free of any dialogue. It does not take long nor is much dialogue needed to see Dwight is well over his head as he haphazardly pursues his murderous vendetta that is filled with extreme brutality and countless errors that produce moments of humor.
You are drawn in as Blair’s agony is exposed giving a view of his motivation of love and fear and what he believes to be justice. Blue Ruin is filled with numerous unexpected events with some unforeseen results as he pursues murderous revenge of a 20-year old double homicide. The film has a consistent stream of action.
Macon decides to hide out in the home of a relative, Sam (Amy Hargreaves) in anticipation for what he believes is sure to follow after his first assassination and the victim’s gun toting family is in pursuit.
Deciding to transform himself into a clean shaven guy next door, Blair attempts to through off the family on his trail. Eventually and long overdue, he calls an old friend Ben (Devin Ratray) for support. Ben provides the firepower and training Macon needs to continue the family feud.
The wide angle shots make it difficult to see what is going in the scenes and combined with the sound design by Matt Snedecor and Dan Flosdorf, score by Brooke and Will Blair and Julia Bloch’s editing, makes for thrilling suspense.
