Writers and Directors Colin and Cameron Cairnes
Cast:

100 BLOODY ACRES, Directed by Colin and Cameron Cairnes, tells the twisted tale of two brothers, Reg
( Damon Herriman) and Lindsay Morgan (Angus Sampson) who go to bloody extremes to keep their organic blood and bone fertilizer business afloat.
Reg happens upon three travelers Sophie (Anna Anna McGahan), James (Oliver Ackland) and Wes (Jamie Kristian) stranded on a remote country road and sees an opportunity to get the respect of his big brother, Lindsay, and the needed ingredient for their new customer.
Blending the two genres of horror and comedy can often be a daunting task yet Colin and Cameron Cairnes mesh the two with endless laughter and blood splatter.
I had the opportunity to speak with Colin and Cameron Cairnes while they are in the United States to promote their first feature film “100 Bloody Acres.”
YRN-Yeicket.com: It was 6-7 years from the first draft to its release, why so long?
Colin Cairnes: It is not that we had been holed up in a garage somewhere writing for all that time. We have been developing for that period. We started in 2004 tinkering with this idea and developing it. We have been working on other projects and short films. 2-3 years ago we were happy with it. We started to get some runs on the board, got noticed and finally got some funding.

YRN-Yeticket.com: How do you prepare for writing a horror/comedy script?
Colin Cairnes: I don’t think you really consciously think of comedy. You’re really writing a drama. It is what comes out of the situation, the horror and comedy really. If your goal is to write a great drama, it will include those elements and multi dimensional characters. It is how we write. When we write a script it already has those elements in it.
YRN-Yeticket.com: Were there any of your own life experiences written into the script?
Colin Cairnes: Yes, There are things drawn from our own life. The relationships for sure. It also included the language and some of the sayings of our Father and Grandfather.
YRN-Yeticket.com: What actor or producer in the US would you like to work with?
Cameron Cairnes: The list could be endless. We are attracted to the character actors instead of the lead guy, like Dustin Hoffman.
Colin Cairnes: We are really happy with our producer. She is the one who bought the script. She made this happen for us. We hope to work with her on other projects.
YRN-Yeticket.com: What advice would you give siblings who want to work together as writers and directors?
Colin Cairnes: Make sure you get all of your fighting out of the way when you are young and beat the crap out of each other before the age of 20. We are friends. It is not his work or mine. It is our work.
YRN-Yeticket.com: Did you have Damon, Angus, Anna, Oliver or Jamie in mind as you were writing the script?
Colin Cairnes: We did not have anyone in mind as we were writing. When it came to casting, we had a chance to see some great actors. Angus, we worked with him on a short film prior to this feature. We knew we wanted to work with him on something and when he read for Lindsay, a psychopath, he just transformed. We knew it had to be him. The guys we ended up with are what we had in mind. The time is now for Damon and Angus.
YRN-Yeticket.com: What is your next project?
Colin Cairnes: “They Shoot Hostages, Don’t They?” It is a crime/comedy. It is a real ensemble piece like 100 acres.
YRN-Yeticket.com: Why the relationship with Lindsay and Aunt Nancy?
Colin Cairnes: You want to know what is up with that? These guys lived in a very small, remote community. It may or may not be seen as a bit incestuous. She is an old family friend. Some parts of Australia, people call each other Auntie even though they are not related.
YRN-Yeticket.com: What was the motivation for the relation between the two?
Colin Cairnes: We loved the shock, the surprise. It was a shocking moment. We were on the journey with Reg to the house and we had to confront him with something. It had a strange logic to it. It worked. In this instance it made sense.

YRN-Yeticket.com: How do you direct actors for both horror and comedy, going from scene to scene?
Colin Cairnes: It is a matter of tweaking here or there. When you have a great script and cast, most of your work is already done.
YRN-Yeticket.com: You are always asked questions. What do you want people to know about 100 Bloody Acres?
Colin Cairnes: We want them to know that it is great Aussie entertainment. There is something in it for everyone. There is something for horror fans and splatter fans. It is musical. If you like westerns, you’ll like the location. It will make for a great date movie. There is someone you can root for and there is strong woman.
